Is a Replica Watch Right for You?

There are few of us who wouldn’t jump at the chance to own a genuine Rolex, Breitling, Cartier, or other truly superior watch, but the harsh reality is that such timepieces are simply priced beyond the means of all but a miniscule percentage of consumers. So a thriving market for replica Rolex watches, replica Breitling watches, and replicas of watches from all the top designers has developed. Who exactly is buying these watches; are they worth the money; and is a replica Breitling watch, fake Rolex, or other imitation right for you?

People who buy replica watches can do so because their professions require them to present themselves in the best possible light. Sporting a $10,000 watch will go a very long way in making a good impression, but for many of us $10,000 would buy a year of college, or a car. Doctors, lawyers, politicians, investment bankers, well-paid athletes, and entertainers may all be able to handle the cost of an authentic Rolex, but you may be someone who needs the look just as much, without being able to handle the price tag. If so, you’re not alone.

Even if you have the coin for the genuine article, however, is wearing a $10,000 watch wherever you go really such a great idea? Of course there are situations in which you could wear it and feel perfectly safe, but there may also be situations where such a watch would be an open invitation to muggers. Sure, if you can afford to buy it, you can afford to insure it, but who needs the experience of being robbed and the hassle of trying to recover the investment?

Are replica watches worth the money?

It depends on how much money. If you take the time to learn your way around the world of replica designer watches, you will soon learn that there are top-notch replicas, and there are cheap knockoffs, yet they are all advertised as genuine Rolex or Breitling replicas. You’ll need to become familiar with the standards for each grade of replica watch, because the more closely they mimic the authentic timepieces, the more expensive they are going to be. But the best Swiss-made replicas will be, to the uneducated observer, identical to authentic designer watches.

When you purchase a Swiss-manufactured replica, you will be buying a watch with components–including Swiss-produced ETA movement and either 18 karat solid gold or 18 karat triple wrapped gold–which cost $300; if you settle for the best replica watches from China or another Asian country, the cost to the manufacturer will usually be less than $40. So how well do you really think Asian replicas can match up to the Rolexes and Breitlings they are supposed to duplicate?

A single Swiss ETA 25-jewel movement will run $80; that by itself doubles what all the components of a Chinese-made replica cost. And for the extra money, you’ll be benefiting from a far more durable movement with a second-hand which silently glides along hour after hour. No annoying ticking!

Swiss replica rolex watches are, quite simply, as close as you are going to get to the real thing. They are made from the same 440-grade stainless steel as the real thing, and their prices reflect it. You can expect to pay a minimum of $600 (still better than $7,000-plus) for a replica containing 440 stainless steel, but you will be getting a pressure-resistant, scratch-resistant watch strong enough to handle dives of up to thirty meters. How often do you do that?

You’ll also be getting a watch with a laser-engraved, as opposed to an ink-stamped, set of markings on its face. Even the small size of the ink markings on the Japanese replicas does not prevent them from blurring, while the laser-etched markings permanently remain crisp and clear.

Your Swiss made replica will also feel more substantial (because it weighs about 25% more) than an Asian replica of the same model. Part of the difference lies in the sapphire crystals on the Swiss watches, which outweigh the mineral crystals or glass used in the Chinese and Japanese replicas.

Of course, even the best fake Rolex watches or Breitling watch will not weigh as much as a solid gold original, simply because gold plating does not weigh as much as solid gold. And the biggest flaw in any replica designer watch is that even the most expensive are not warranted against their gold plate wearing off. If you use your replica daily, its plating will almost certainly begin to wear away after several months, and you will need to have it re-plated if you want it to look like an authentic Rolex or Breitling.

Is an imitation Rolex watch right for you? If you care about making a great impression, are willing both to do what it takes to keep your fake Rolex looking like the solid-gold watch it is imitating, and to spend between $700 and $1200 for a high-quality Swiss replica, then you can go for years, or maybe forever, without anyone being the wiser. But any other replica designer watches are unlikely to fool a knowledgeable eye for long.
